Some tests are used clinically to assess executive functions in adults with ADHD. These tests are simple clinic based tests that is used to assess various aspects of executive functions. Trail making test:
Trail making test is a simple and very commonly used test in neuropsychological assessments.
It has 2 parts and can be completed with a simple pen and paper.
The part A of the test consists of connecting 25 numbers and people are roughly expected to complete within 30 seconds.
The part B of the test consists of a combination of letters and numbers (12 each) and one should alternate between letters and numbers.
It sounds very simple but this is a good test of working memory. It also measures processing speed and attention.
Verbal Fluency FAS
Verbal fluency Animals, Fruits:
These tests which requires a person to verbalize as many words as they can with letters FAS in 60 seconds and words from particular groups such as animals, fruits and so forth in 60 seconds. This is a measure of phonetic and semantic verbal fluency.
Clock drawing test:
Drawing a clock and marking a specified time is a simple clinic test that can be used to assess executive functions, memory as well as visuospatial abilities.
Digits forward and backward sequencing
A set of 6 numbers are given and the individual is asked to repeat them in forward and backward sequences. It tests working memory and attention.
Stroop
Stroop test is used to assess interference in the reaction time of a task.
Different colour words are written in different colours and the person is asked the name the COLOUR instead of the WORD /NAME of the colour.
